1870 - In Galveston, the cornerstone was laid for the Temple B'nai Israel.

1894 - In Corisicana, oil was discovered while workers were drilling for water. A commercial field opened at the location in 1896.

1902 - The Texas Library Association was organized in Austin as a non-profit organization dedicated to improving libraries statewide.

1998 - In Jasper, TX, three white men were charged in the dragging death of African-American James Byrd Jr.
