1849 - Company C, Mounted Rifles, arrived at Fort Laramie.

1865 - Near the present day city of Casper, the Battle of Platte Bridge took place. Five soldiers, including Lieutenant Caspar Collins, were killed.

1865 - The Battle of Red Buttes took place. Twenty-one soldiers of twenty-four were killed.

1871 - Ferdinand Hayden and his expedition arrived at Yellowstone Lake.
