1861 - Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederate States of America. Davis was informed the next day.

1864 - Union General George Armstrong Custer and Elizabeth Bacon were married in Monroe, Michigan. Custer was killed on June 25, 1876, by Lakota and Northern Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in Montana.
