1863 - Two Union corps under William T. Sherman and James McPherson drove Confederates under Joseph Johnston out of Jackson, Mississippi.

1864 - The Battle of Resaca, Georgia, began. This was one of the first fights in Union General William T. Sherman's campaign to capture Atlanta. The battle was considered at tactical victory for the Rebels because they had maintained their position and thwarted the Union offense.
