World War II History 1935 - Adolf Hitler ordered a German rearmament and violated the Versailles Treaty. 1939 - Germany occupied what remained of Czechoslovakia. 1940 - Germany bombed the Scapa Flow naval base near Scotland. 1942 - U.S. President Roosevelt ordered men between the ages of 45 and 64 to register for non-military duty. 1945 - Iwo Jima was declared secure by the Allies. However, small pockets of Japanese resistance still existed. 1998 - The Vatican expressed remorse for the cowardice of some Christians during the holocaust of World War II. However, the Vatican did defend the actions of Pope Pius XII. 2000 - Thomas Wilson Ferebee died at the age of 81. He was the bombardier of the Enola Gay and was the person that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. See our World War II page on Facebook!
