U.S. President History 1776 - The amended Declaration of Independence, prepared by Thomas Jefferson, was approved and signed by John Hancock, the President of the Continental Congress in America. 1826 - The second president of the United States, John Adams, died. 1826 - The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, died. 1831 - The fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, died. 1861 - U.S. President Lincoln, in a speech to Congress, stated the war is..."a People's contest... a struggle for maintaining in the world, that form, and substance of government, whose leading object is, to elevate the condition of men..." 1872 - Calvin Coolidge was born in Plymouth, VT. In 1923, he became the 30th President of the United States. 1966 - U.S. President Johnson signed the Freedom of Information Act, which went into effect the following year. 1981 - Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people.
