- Began in 1919 to commemorate the termination of World War I. World War I ended at 11am on Nov. 11, 1918.
- Formerly known as Armistice Day. The holiday acquired the name Veteran's Day in 1954.
- In Canada it is known as Remembrance Day
- In Great Britain, as Remembrance Sunday.
- June 22, 1944 - U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the "GI Bill of Rights" to provide broad benefits for veterans of the war (World War II).
