Elvis' Birthday
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in the very poor town of Tupelo Mississippi. A few years later
the family moved to Memphis Tennessee. The mother and father would stay in
Memphis for the duration of their lives.
During his most early years the family struggled to survive. Elvis's parents
Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith Presley were saddened by the death
of Elvis's twin brother at birth. The death was to affect Elvis till the day he met his maker. Each birthday
Elvis would add an extra candle to his cake in order to honor his brother.
Elvis was a superstitious person and even attempted to contact his brother
using a gypsy. While stationed at Ft. Hood Texas Elvis first tried to contact
his brother while on a trip to Neva Laredo, Texas. As the years passed both
the family and Elvis recovered from the loss. In his later years Elvis would
complain about feeling incomplete. It is thought that this was a psychological
condition based on the death of his identical twin.
Today Elvis's birthday is celebrated worldwide by tens of thousands of fans.
Graceland is always packed on Elvis's birthday with fans literally lined up
to the gates of the mansion.
